Heron Bros Support Civil Engineering Students

As part of Heron Bros' social impact being delivered through the construction phase of the Edinburgh Innovation Hub, they partnered with The University of Edinburgh's Civil Engineering Society to deliver unique sector experience. Over two weeks, their team conducted mock interviews and feedback sessions with four Civil Engineering students. This initiative provides invaluable hands-on experience, directly enhancing the students' readiness for future job interviews and careers in a high-demand field.

Alla Neklesa of Heron Bros shared why their offer of support can be so essential for students;"Through the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Deal (ESES CRD), we partnered with the Civil Engineering Society at Edinburgh University to support students preparing for their careers.

Over a two-week period, our team conducted mock interviews and feedback sessions with four Civil Engineering students. By sharing our expertise and offering constructive feedback, we aimed to boost their confidence and readiness for real-world job interviews. With Civil Engineers in high demand, this was also a great opportunity for us to connect with emerging talent in the area.

We believe that by investing in the future of civil engineering, we are contributing to the growth and innovation of the industry as a whole.”

Collaboration – how the ESES City Regional Deal is being delivered

The Scottish and UK Governments and regional partners embarked on a new relationship through the City Region Deal. Enhancing existing and developing new collaborations for strategic coordination aims to deliver cross-regional City Region Deal projects effectively in the short term and create future regional infrastructure in the long term. The ESES Communities team contacted their Higher Education partners to ensure this opportunity was used effectively.

Professor Sean Smith, Director of the Centre for Future Infrastructure at the University of Edinburgh, connected us with the Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc).

CivSoc is a student-run society that aims to bring civil engineering students together to help them learn more about the field of civil engineering. It does this by creating strong links with industry and academics through collaborations such as lunchtime talks, guest lectures, and site visits.

We connected Alla from Heron Bros. directly with CivSoc secretary Kate Harvey to ensure Heron was working directly with the emerging talent in the region.

We are very grateful to Heron Bros for this wonderful opportunity to support our students in their career development journey, such engagement enhances our student's experience. Also our thanks to ESES Communities for introducing our students to this opportunity.
