Empowering Woman into Construction

As part of Morrison Construction’s community benefit obligations linked to the Borders Innovation Park development in Tweedbank - one of the capital investment programmes within the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal - they delivered a critical opportunity for local young people to learn more about future careers in the construction industry.

Delivering an informative and engaging session exploring the wide range of construction management roles available across the sector, including administration, document control, site engineering, site management, human resources, quantity surveying, and many more.
They delivered an Employment Taster Day for S2 students from Earlston High School and Galashiels Academy who were preparing to choose their school subjects and considering how these decisions may influence their future careers.

Throughout the day, Morrison's introduced a variety of construction management roles and highlighted the many pathways available into the industry, reinforcing the message that there is no single “right” route to success. Through presentations, breakout discussions, and interactive activities, students explored the skills and qualifications associated with different careers in construction management and gained an understanding of which subjects could support their aspirations.

They also discussed the underrepresentation of women within the construction sector and encouraged students to consider the wide range of opportunities available to everyone, regardless of gender. To conclude the day, students took part in a STEM challenge where they were tasked with pricing, designing, and building a model car using recyclable materials. The activity encouraged teamwork, creativity, budgeting, and problem-solving skills. The day finished with an exciting race to test the performance of each vehicle and celebrate the students’ achievements.
