Thermo Fisher Support Granton Goes Greener
As part of their contract with the University of Edinburgh, Thermo Fisher Scientific were keen to get involved in two local community projects based in North Edinburgh. Thermo Fisher Scientific made financial contributions towards Fresh Start and Granton Goes Greener to support their ongoing efforts which echo their aims to make a positive impact on society and their passion for strengthening the communities in which they live and work in. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is a life science and clinical research company headquartered in the United States. It is a global supplier of analytical instruments, clinical development solutions, specialty diagnostics, laboratory, pharmaceutical and biotechnology services.
Granton Goes Greener are an environmental and community outreach project run by Granton Parish Church in Edinburgh, Scotland .
In 2018 they were awarded funding from the Climate Challenge Fund to set up the Granton Goes Greener project which will look at ways to reduce CO2 emissions within their existing buildings and work with the local community of Granton to ‘Go Greener’.
They provide free services to help the local community sustainably, including a clothing bank, rescued food distribution, and skill-building workshops in a diverse area and the free activities are often the only possibility for community members to learn new skills and give opportunities to connect with their neighbours.
One such project is their "Share'n'Wear" initiative - a free clothing bank, where second-hand clothes and shoes are provided and offer support to anyone in need. They run a free weekly sewing class is aimed at tackling poverty, learning new skills and reducing social isolation in a multicultural community. Usually 10 – 12 people take part in these creative sessions which are free to attend.
Thermo Fisher saw the value in a project like this in terms of learning really valuable practical skills and the advantage of reducing clothing waste by being able to repair and transform items of clothing and donated £200 towards the running costs of the project.
Granton Goes Greener shared with us;
"This grant was used to buy materials in order to keep the classes free at the point of delivery.
We are so grateful for all donations towards this project, which aims to reduce waste, develop skills, provide opportunities for interaction with others and improve participants' confidence."
