WSP UK Supports STEM Education In The Borders
Burgh Primary School, based in Galashiels is a vibrant, community focused educational hub dedicated to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for its pupils.
Located at the heart of its local community, the school prides itself on balancing academic excellence with the social and emotional development of every child. Their motto and ethos center on "Learning Together, Achieving Together," ensuring that students feel empowered to reach their full potential in a safe, creative space.
They raised a request on the ESES Communities portal to hear from professionals who had the time and passion to come and speak to classes about their work or help deliver some STEM workshops to the children.
WSP UK spotted the request and arranged for one of their civil engineering graduates to visit Burgh Primary School to work with the primary 7 pupils on a STEM challenge.
Their civil engineer graduate explained about civil engineering and his role as a bridge engineer before challenging the pupils to design and build their own bridge to a specification. The pupils had to work in small teams using their problem identification and solving skills, communication and teamwork combined with their knowledge of geometry and forces, to build their bridges which were then tested.
The session gave an opportunity for pupils to ask questions about career and gain an understanding of the importance of working hard.
WSP UK are passionate and linking in with communities sharing with us, "STEM engagement is not only part of our community benefit commitments but something very important to WSP. We employ large numbers of engineers, analysts and scientists and encouraging and inspiring the next generation in these fields is good for us, young people and our communities."
I had a great visit at Burgh Primary! The pupils were very enthusiastic and built some impressive bridges. They worked together using their team work and problem solving skills, along with lots of patience. They did very well.
Thanks so much for the visit - the kids loved it and we’d love to have you back anytime! Never underestimate the impact something like this has on children - opens their eyes to so much.
