As a supplier of The University of Edinburgh who are keen to support local community initiatives and a key stakeholder in the ESES City Region Deal, the University is committed to ensuring their contracts create maximum positive community impact and encourage their supply chain to follow suit. The team at Beckman Coulter were keen to get involved and offered their time to volunteer with River Kids in Bathgate.

At River Kids, the core belief is that no child should go without. As a vital local charity operating across West Lothian, the organisation enables positive change for disadvantaged children and their families by providing them with essential goods, clothing, and toys, as well as access to financial support through small grants. Through their dedicated team and volunteers, River Kids works closely with support and social care services to raise standards of living, alleviate stress, and manage key regional initiatives like the West Lothian Toy Appeal to ensure young people have the opportunities they need to thrive.

Volunteers provide River Kids with some additional people-power to help carry out work as they have seen a huge increase on the demand for their services. The team from Beckman Coulter were put to task on a variety of jobs including donation sorting, quality checks of board games (to ensure all pieces were complete as these are sold at the monthly sales to help raise vital funds) and also constructing furniture such as baby cots and changing tables for families in need.

Emma Sharkey, Beckman Coulter shared, "Spending time volunteering with River Kids alongside my Beckman Coulter colleagues Mike, David and Fabio was an incredibly rewarding experience. We all came away feeling that we had truly contributed something meaningful to the local West Lothian community. It reflects an ethos that aligns closely with Beckman Coulter Life Sciences’ 80-year mission to support advanced scientific research and patient care globally —reminding us that while our work impacts patients around the world, it is equally valuable and impactful to support tangible needs within our own local communities.

Beckman kindly provided a team of volunteers to support us with furniture construction and donation sorting for a day. We rely on support from teams like Beckman Coulter to help our small team ensure the quality of the furniture items like the beds are have the all parts and are fully functional as they will go on to someone in need. A huge thank you to Emma and the team for working so hard. We hope you enjoyed the day!
